In Britain, Mini Eggs announce spring more reliably than the weather does. The speckled shells appear on the shelves, everyone has an opinion about how many is a reasonable handful, and by Easter Sunday there is a Cadbury egg sitting on most kitchen tables.

Easter in Canada is lovely, but it is not the Easter you grew up with unless the right egg turns up. People look for this one because it is the box they remember: the purple, the Mini Eggs name, the careful unwrapping, the foil folded and then immediately forgotten. Half of it is nostalgia. The other half is making sure the kids get the same Easter morning you did.

The medium egg sits neatly between the little ones hidden for the hunt and the giant ones nobody finishes. Keep the box in a cool, dry cupboard, away from the radiator and away from anyone who only wants to have a look. It does one person over a long weekend, or a family after Sunday lunch.
