About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Double Decker

About Cadbury Double Decker

Some chocolate bars you eat. A Double Decker you work through. The Cadbury Double Decker is the bar that sat heavy in your school bag and still somehow vanished before the bus came.

Two layers, one chewy, one crunchy, all wrapped up in Cadbury milk chocolate. It takes a few proper bites, which is half the point. Nobody has ever eaten one quickly and felt good about it afterwards.

This is the UK bar, the one from the newsagent's counter, and it ships from within Canada. So the next one is a lot closer than Birmingham.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Double Decker

Q: How big is a Double Decker?

A: It is the standard single bar at 54.5g. Big enough that you notice, small enough that you will still want a second.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Tuck a few in a parcel to a homesick Brit and watch how fast the thank-you message comes back.

Q: How should I keep it?

A: Somewhere dry and away from heat, so a cupboard rather than a sunny windowsill. Whether it lasts long enough for storage to matter is another question.

Q: Do you have other Cadbury bars?

A: We bring in a range of Cadbury from the UK, so it is worth having a look around the shop. The Double Decker rarely travels alone in a basket.

More about Cadbury Double Decker

In Britain the Double Decker lives on the corner shop rack with all the bars people argue about. It is the one you pick when you are properly hungry, the chunky option in a row of slim ones. Lunchboxes, petrol stations, the vending machine at the swimming baths.

People in Canada tend to search for it by name, usually after someone mentions it and a whole conversation about the tuck shop breaks out. It is the bar a lot of British expats grew up on, and the craving tends to arrive all at once, with no warning.

It is a single bar, a decent 54.5g, wrapped for a pocket or a bag. Keep it somewhere dry and away from heat, which in a Canadian summer means not on the car dashboard. Some people swear by it cold from the fridge. That is a debate for another day.

Cadbury makes plenty more that British shoppers reach for, from Dairy Milk to the bars that sat beside the Double Decker on the shelf. Most people who order one add a few other Cadbury favourites while they are at it, and then a few more.
