About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel

About Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel

You snap off a square and the caramel comes with you, stretching out like it has somewhere better to be. Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel has always been a bit clingy like that.

Dairy Milk chocolate on the outside, soft caramel in every chunk. It is the bar you bought from the newsagent on the way home from school and finished before the end of the road.

Anyone who grew up with it knows the rules. One row is a snack. Two rows is a decision. The whole bar is just a Tuesday.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel

Q: Is this the UK version of Dairy Milk Caramel?

A: Yes, this is the British bar, made for the UK market, and we ship it from within Canada. The one you remember, not a lookalike.

Q: How big is the bar?

A: It is a 120g bar, broken into chunks. Sharing size, in theory.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses the UK?

A: Very much so. Hand a British expat a bar of Dairy Milk Caramel and watch them go quiet for a minute. Pair it with a few other Cadbury bars and you have a proper parcel from home.

Q: Do you carry other Cadbury chocolate?

A: We bring in a range of Cadbury from the UK, so have a look around the shop. The caramel bar usually has company.

More about Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel

In Britain, the caramel bar sits right next to plain Dairy Milk on every corner shop shelf, and plenty of people would quietly argue it is the better of the two. It is a proper part of the everyday chocolate furniture: the bar in the glovebox, the bar in the desk drawer, the bar nobody remembers buying.

People in Canada search for it by name because it is the one they remember. The particular Dairy Milk taste, the way the caramel runs when it is a touch warm, the exact size of a chunk. Once you know it, you go looking for it.

This is the 120g bar, split into chunks you can break off one at a time or, more honestly, a row at a time. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from the sunny windowsill, and it will sit happily in the cupboard until someone finds it.

It rarely travels alone. It tends to land in the basket alongside other Cadbury favourites and a box of proper British tea bags, because a caramel chunk and a strong cuppa were always meant to meet.
