The story of Cadbury Bournville Old Jamaica Dark Chocolate Rum & Raisin
The bar with a grown-up name
Somebody's dad always had one of these, tucked away from the kids and broken off a square at a time after tea. Old Jamaica was the bar you graduated to once you were old enough to pretend you liked dark chocolate. Then, annoyingly, you actually did. It sits under the Bournville name, and that matters, because Bournville is not just a word on a wrapper. It is the place Cadbury built, and the joke hiding in this bar starts there.

Tea, coffee and good intentions
John Cadbury opened a grocer's shop at 93 Bull Street in Birmingham in 1824, selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate he prepared himself. He was a Quaker, and he promoted drinking chocolate partly as a respectable alternative to alcohol. From 1831 the business moved into factory production on Bridge Street. His sons, Richard and George, took over in 1861, adopted a Dutch cocoa-pressing method and launched the purer Cocoa Essence in 1866. Sober, serious people. Hold that thought.
A village with no pub
In 1879 Richard and George opened a purpose-built factory at Bournville, south-west of Birmingham. George developed it into a model village for the firm's workers, famous for having no public houses. So: a family who sold chocolate as the alternative to a drink, a village where you could not get a pint, and a dark chocolate bar carrying that village's name with rum and raisin on the front. You do wonder what the founders would make of it. You suspect they would have a square anyway.
Still Birmingham at heart
The firm has been through a fair bit since. It merged with J. S. Fry & Sons in 1919 and with Schweppes in 1969, Kraft Foods acquired it in 2010, and it is now part of Mondelez International. Dairy Milk arrived in 1905 and was the best-seller by 1914. But Cadbury chocolate is still made in Britain at the historic Bournville factory, and Old Jamaica is still the one you keep at the back of the cupboard, where nobody else thinks to look.
