About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Sharwood's Medium Curry Powder

About Sharwood's Medium Curry Powder

Every British kitchen had one. Usually at the back of the cupboard, usually older than anyone would admit, and always the thing that turned leftover chicken into Tuesday's tea.

Sharwood's Medium Curry Powder is that one. A spoonful in the pan with a fried onion and you are halfway to the curry you grew up on, the one made long before anybody owned a spice rack.

Medium, so it warms things up without starting an argument at the table. Coronation chicken, curried eggs, a pot of something on a cold night: it does the lot, and nobody asks for the recipe because everybody already knows it.

Frequently asked questions about Sharwood's Medium Curry Powder

Q: Is this the British version?

A: Yes, it is the UK Sharwood's Medium Curry Powder, the same one on British supermarket shelves, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How hot is medium?

A: Warm rather than fierce. Enough to know it is there, gentle enough that the whole table can eat it. Add more if you are feeling brave.

Q: How long does a 102g pot last?

A: Longer than you would think, since most recipes only call for a spoonful or two. It is the sort of pot that sees you through a good few curries.

Q: What do people use it for?

A: Homemade curries, coronation chicken, curried eggs and a quick curry sauce for chips are the usual suspects. Some people just shake it into the mince and call it tradition.

More about Sharwood's Medium Curry Powder

Curry has been part of British home cooking for generations, and the yellow-labelled Sharwood's name has sat on supermarket shelves through most of it. For plenty of families, this was what curry meant: not a takeaway, but a Saturday pot on the hob.

People in Canada go looking for it by name because the old recipes do. The handwritten card from your nan says Sharwood's, the coronation chicken from every summer party tastes of it, and the blend you know is the one you want.

The pot holds 102g of powder, and since most dishes only need a teaspoon or two, it goes a long way. Keep the lid on tight and store it somewhere cool and dry in the cupboard. Stir it into mince, a sauce, a marinade or a mayonnaise, and adjust to taste as you go.

Sharwood's is best known in Britain for its curry sauces, mango chutney and poppadoms, and the powder tends to travel home in the same basket. A jar of chutney on the side and you have the full British curry night, the slightly chaotic kind.
