About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Colman's Bramley Apple Sauce

About Colman's Bramley Apple Sauce

Roast pork without apple sauce is just a lump of meat waiting for an apology. Colman's Bramley Apple Sauce is the apology.

It takes its name from the Bramley, the cooking apple Britain has trusted for generations. You spoon it next to the crackling, then go back for more when you think nobody is watching.

If Sunday dinner at home always had a jar of Colman's sitting by the gravy boat, you already know. If it did not, someone at your table definitely did, and they have been quietly missing it for years.

Frequently asked questions about Colman's Bramley Apple Sauce

Q: Is this the UK version of Colman's apple sauce?

A: Yes, it is the British jar, the same one on supermarket shelves back home. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 155g jar. Enough for a good roast for the family, assuming nobody gets greedy with the crackling.

Q: What do people eat it with apart from roast pork?

A: Pork chops and sausages are the obvious ones. It also turns up next to cheese, in a leftover pork sandwich, and occasionally straight off the spoon when the fridge door is open.

Q: Does it make a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: For anyone who still does a Sunday roast in Canada, very much so. Pair it with a jar of Colman's mint sauce or a tin of mustard and you have covered half the roast.

More about Colman's Bramley Apple Sauce

In a proper British roast, every meat has its partner. Mint sauce goes with lamb, horseradish goes with beef, and apple sauce goes with pork. Nobody wrote the rule down. Everybody follows it anyway, and Colman's is the name most people picture on the jar.

Living in Canada does not stop the Sunday roast, it just makes you hunt for the details. You can do the pork, the potatoes and the gravy perfectly, and it still feels a bit off without the jar you grew up with on the table.

A proper little 155g jar, small enough to live in the cupboard until the next roast comes round. Beyond pork, it earns its keep in a sausage sandwich, beside a wedge of strong cheese, or stirred into gravy for a sweeter edge. Check the lid once it is open and follow what the jar says.

Colman's also makes mint sauce, horseradish and, of course, the famous English mustard. Put a few of them on the table together and the whole roast speaks with a Norwich accent.
