About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Vimto Original Cordial

About Vimto Original Cordial

Nobody has ever managed to explain what Vimto tastes like. Everybody knows it the second it hits the glass. Vimto Original Cordial is the purple bottle from the back of your nan's cupboard, the jug on the table after school, the squash you were told to water down properly and never did.

It is a cordial, so a bottle goes a long way and you decide how strong. Too strong is the traditional setting.

Grow up near Manchester and it was practically on tap. Grow up anywhere else in Britain and someone from Manchester has definitely told you about it.

Frequently asked questions about Vimto Original Cordial

Q: Is this the UK Vimto?

A: Yes, it is the original cordial made in the United Kingdom, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How much do I get?

A: A 725ml bottle of concentrate, so once it is diluted that is a good few jugs. How many depends entirely on how strong you like it.

Q: Can I drink it hot?

A: You can, and a lot of people from the north of England would say you should. Top it up with hot water instead of cold and see.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: For anyone who grew up with it, a bottle of Vimto does more talking than a card ever could. Expect them to tell you a story about it.

More about Vimto Original Cordial

Vimto belongs to that very British kitchen habit: the bottle of cordial you dilute, kept next to the kettle and topped up all week. It has been doing that job for well over a century, and the flavour is still entirely its own.

In Canada, people tend to go looking for it for one reason. You cannot describe it to anyone who has not had it, so the only option is to pour them a glass and watch their face. Kids of British parents who tried it on a summer visit ask for it by name.

The 725ml bottle is concentrated, so mix it with water, still or fizzy, until it looks right to you. Unopened, it sits happily in the cupboard. Plenty of people swear by hot Vimto on a cold evening, which sounds odd until you have one.

It goes in the basket with the other things from the corner shop on the way home: a packet of crisps, a bag of sweets, a chocolate bar you were not supposed to buy. Same feeling, different side of the Atlantic.
