About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Twinings Tea Lady Grey

About Twinings Tea Lady Grey

Earl Grey has a quieter sister, and frankly she has better manners. Twinings Lady Grey is the one you reach for when a regular brew feels too heavy and Earl Grey feels like showing off.

It is the cup from the good mugs, the afternoon pot at your nan's, the box somebody kept nicking from the office kitchen. Lighter, brighter, and gone faster than you planned.

Forty bags sounds like plenty until about Thursday. This is the UK blend, and it ships from within Canada, so the cupboard gets restocked without anyone smuggling it home in a suitcase.

Frequently asked questions about Twinings Tea Lady Grey

Q: How many tea bags are in the box?

A: Forty. That is a good few weeks for one person, and considerably fewer once the household finds out it is in the cupboard.

Q: Is Lady Grey the same as Earl Grey?

A: Same family, different temperament. Lady Grey is the lighter, softer one, and if Earl Grey has always felt a bit much, this is usually where people end up.

Q: Does it make a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. It weighs next to nothing, it gets opened the same day, and the right box of tea says more than most cards manage.

More about Twinings Tea Lady Grey

In Britain, Lady Grey lives somewhere between the morning builder's brew and the evening chamomile. It is the afternoon tea, the one that comes out when there is cake on an actual plate rather than a biscuit straight from the packet.

People in Canada search for it by name because the name is the whole point. Once you have taken your tea a particular way for twenty years, near enough just is not the cup you meant, and Lady Grey is a very particular taste of a very particular kitchen.

The box holds 40 tea bags. Keep it closed, somewhere cool and dry and well away from the spice rack, and it sits happily in the cupboard. Some people take it black, some add a splash of milk, and nobody needs to win that argument over the kettle.

It sits nicely next to a box of Twinings Earl Grey or English Breakfast, so there is a tea for every hour of the day. Add a packet of proper British biscuits and the afternoon more or less sorts itself out.
