About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Swizzels Pharma Violets

About Swizzels Pharma Violets

Nobody is neutral about Parma Violets. You either love them or you think they taste like your nan's handbag, and the people who love them are not giving them up.

These are Swizzels Parma Violets, the little lilac tablets that tasted of a garden and a grandmother at the same time, bought with pocket money and shared with nobody.

Floral, chalky, faintly perfumed. One goes in, then another, then you look down and they are gone and you smell faintly of a flower bed.

If you have spent years trying to explain them to Canadian friends, stop explaining. Hand one over and watch their face. That is half the fun.

Frequently asked questions about Swizzels Pharma Violets

Q: Are these the real British Parma Violets?

A: Yes, these are the UK Parma Violets from Swizzels, and they ship from within Canada. Same lilac tablets, same flavour that divides a room.

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is 40g, which is a pocketful. Enough to share if you are feeling generous, and enough not to if you are not.

Q: Are they good to send as a gift?

A: Very good, especially for anyone who grew up with them. Tuck them into a care package and let the first one do the talking.

Q: What goes well with them?

A: Other Swizzels classics from the same era, like Love Hearts and Refreshers, if you are building a proper old sweet shop bag.

More about Swizzels Pharma Violets

Parma Violets belong to that very British corner of the sweet shop where Love Hearts and Refreshers live: paper bags, school blazer pockets, the sweets you could buy a lot of with very little. Swizzels still make them in Derbyshire, which feels about right.

People in Canada come looking for them because the taste is so particular it cannot really be described. You can only remember it, and once you have remembered it, you want one. Usually several.

The 40g pack is small enough for a coat pocket, a glovebox or a desk drawer, which is exactly where they will end up. Keep them somewhere cool and dry and they will last as long as your willpower does. That is not usually long.

Swizzels also make Love Hearts, Refreshers and Drumstick lollies, and Parma Violets have a habit of landing in the same basket. Put a few in a parcel for someone who misses home, or save one for the colleague who says they have never tried them.
