About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Swizzels Originals Parma Violets

About Swizzels Originals Parma Violets

Nobody is neutral about Parma Violets. You either love them, or you think they taste like your gran's handbag, and no amount of arguing has ever changed anyone's mind.

These are Swizzels Originals Parma Violets: the little pale purple tablets with that floral flavour nothing else in the sweet shop ever dared to copy. One goes in, and you are ten again, counting out pocket money at the corner shop.

Made in Britain by the people behind Love Hearts, and still every bit as purple. Share them with the believers. Hand one to a sceptic and watch their face.

Frequently asked questions about Swizzels Originals Parma Violets

Q: Is this the proper UK version?

A: It is. These are Swizzels Originals Parma Violets made in Britain, and we ship them from within Canada.

Q: Do they taste the way I remember?

A: Same little purple tablets, same floral flavour, same split opinion around the room. If you liked them then, you will like them now.

Q: Are they a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so, especially to someone who still defends them. A pack in the post says you remembered the odd little things, which is the whole point.

Q: What else do Swizzels make?

A: Swizzels are behind Love Hearts, Drumstick lollies and Refreshers, among others. Have a look around the shop for whichever ones you grew up arguing over.

More about Swizzels Originals Parma Violets

Parma Violets belong to the great British tradition of the newsagent's sweet counter, where the choice mattered more than the money. They sat in the same playground economy as Love Hearts and Refreshers, traded, hoarded and occasionally confiscated.

In Canada they are the sweet people struggle to describe. Try explaining to a friend that the flavour is "a bit like a flower, in a good way" and you will see why so many people simply want a pack in hand to prove it. Then there are the ones who just miss them, quietly, and have done for years.

The pack holds plenty, which is just as well, because nobody eats Parma Violets by the fistful. One at a time, slowly, is the proper way. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, sealed up, and they will sit happily in the cupboard or the glovebox until the urge strikes.

Swizzels make a whole cast of British sweet-shop regulars, from Love Hearts to Drumstick lollies and Refreshers. Parma Violets tend to go in the basket alongside those, or into a bowl of mixed sweets where they are always the last ones left, depending on who you ask.
