About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Simpkins Mixed Fruit Sugar Free

About Simpkins Mixed Fruit Sugar Free

Some sweets are for eating. Simpkins are for rationing, one at a time, on a long drive, while somebody in the back asks how much further.

These are Simpkins Mixed Fruit travel sweets, made in Sheffield. They are boiled sweets that last for miles if you have the discipline, and about four junctions if you do not.

They are the glovebox sweet, the handbag sweet, the one your nan always had somewhere about her person, ready for anyone who looked a bit peaky.

This is the UK product, and it ships from within Canada, so the next long drive across a province can taste a bit like the M1.

Frequently asked questions about Simpkins Mixed Fruit Sugar Free

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is 175g of hard travel sweets, which is a decent haul. Enough to share on a drive, if you are feeling generous.

Q: Is it a good thing to send as a gift?

A: Very much so, especially to someone who grew up with Simpkins rattling around the car. It travels well and it says you remembered.

Q: What are Simpkins known for?

A: Travel sweets, made in Sheffield for around a hundred years. Hard, long-lasting fruit sweets that have been keeping British passengers quiet for generations.

More about Simpkins Mixed Fruit Sugar Free

Simpkins has been making travel sweets in Sheffield for about a century, and for a lot of British families they lived at the chemist's counter as much as in the sweet shop. A proper grown-up sweet, the sort that turned up in a coat pocket or a nan's handbag.

People in Canada go looking for these because nothing jogs the memory like the exact sweet. Not a fruit drop, that fruit drop. One suck and you are in the back seat on the way to the coast, being told to stop asking if you are nearly there.

The 175g pack is a good, solid amount of hard sweets that sit happily in the cupboard, the car door or a desk drawer. Keep them sealed between goes and they will see you through a fair few journeys. Being a mixed fruit assortment, everyone gets a lucky dip, and nobody can complain about the last one.

Simpkins makes a whole range of travel sweets in other flavours, and fans tend to have firm opinions about which is best. Plenty of people grab a few other British sweets for the passenger seat while they are at it.
