About Mr Kipling Battenberg

About Mr Kipling Battenberg

Everyone has a method. Some peel the outside off first, some eat the pink squares and leave the yellow, and one person in every family just eats the slice like a normal human.

Mr Kipling Battenberg is the checkerboard cake from your nan's cake tin, the one that came out whenever somebody dropped in unannounced.

Pink and yellow sponge, sliced to show off the squares, served with a pot of tea and no ceremony at all. You never gave it a second thought until you moved four thousand miles away. Now you think about it quite a lot.

Put the kettle on.

Frequently asked questions about Mr Kipling Battenberg

Q: Is this the UK Battenberg?

A: It is, Mr Kipling's own British Battenberg, the one you remember, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is it?

A: It is a 230g cake, whole, so the slicing (and the arguing over who gets the end) is up to you.

Q: How should I keep it?

A: We keep it in the freezer. Let it thaw before you slice it, then keep it covered so the sponge stays soft.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: For someone who grew up with it, very much so. Add a box of tea bags and you have sorted their afternoon.

More about Mr Kipling Battenberg

Battenberg sits firmly in the British teatime crowd, alongside the Victoria sponge and the Bakewell tart. Mr Kipling made it a supermarket regular, so it turned up in lunchboxes, on church hall tables and on the plate at every relative's house.

People in Canada go looking for it because a slice with a cup of tea at four o'clock is one of those small habits that never quite travels. And the checkerboard is very hard to explain to anyone who has not seen one cut open.

It is a whole cake, ready for you to slice. It lives in our freezer, so let it come back to room temperature before the knife goes in. Thin slices make it last the week. Thick slices make it last the afternoon.

Most baskets with a Battenberg in them also have a box of proper British tea bags nearby, and quite often another Mr Kipling cake for later. Nobody has ever regretted that.
