About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Choco Crackles

About Morrisons Choco Crackles

The best bit was always the milk at the end. Morrisons Choco Crackles are the supermarket's own chocolate rice cereal, the box that lived in British cupboards next to the bread bin while the big brands spent their money on cartoons.

They crackle the second the milk goes on. Give it a minute and the whole bowl turns chocolatey, and then somebody is drinking it straight from the bowl when they think nobody is looking.

If you grew up on the weekly Morrisons shop, you know this box. The trolley, the cereal aisle, the row over which one went in. This one usually won.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Choco Crackles

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: Yes, it is the Morrisons box straight from the British supermarket, the same one on the shelf in Bradford. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the box?

A: It is a 500g box. That is several breakfasts, or one very determined teenager.

Q: Would it make a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Better than you would think. Post a box to the homesick student or the British dad who still talks about the Saturday shop and watch how fast it disappears.

More about Morrisons Choco Crackles

Own-label cereal is how a lot of Britain actually eats breakfast. Morrisons, the supermarket that started out in Bradford, puts its own name on the box, and plenty of families never saw a reason to buy anything else.

Nobody in Canada searches for chocolate rice cereal in general. They search for this one, because it is the one from the Saturday shop, the one poured before school, the one eaten dry from the box during the telly. That is a very particular memory, and it lives in a very particular box.

It comes in a 500g box, which is a good few breakfasts or a couple of days, depending on who is pouring. Fold the bag down tight and it keeps happily in the cupboard. Breakfast, the after-school bowl, the late-night bowl you would rather not discuss, and the odd tray of crispy cakes when the kids want something to do.

It tends to go in the basket with a box of proper tea and something British for the toast, so the whole breakfast tastes like the one you left behind.
