About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Maynards Mini Gems

About Maynards Mini Gems

Maynards Mini Gems are the sort of British sweet that people know by name without necessarily being able to explain why. Small, colourful, chewy fruit gum pieces in a bag that has always looked like it contains more than it does. If you grew up in the UK, you have almost certainly had a handful of these at some point, possibly from a corner shop, possibly from someone's coat pocket on a long car journey.

This is the 130g bag, imported from the United Kingdom, containing the fruit flavour gums from the Maynards Bassetts range. The format is a pouch of small, glossy gums with that characteristic chewy texture British sweets tend to do rather well. They are dairy-free, which is worth knowing if you are buying for a mixed group.

For British expats in Canada, Maynards is a name that needs no introduction, and The Great British Shop stocks them so you are not left hoping a visiting relative remembers to pack a bag. These are the proper UK version, shipped from Canada, without the fuss of hunting through an international aisle and finding something that is merely adjacent to what you actually wanted.

Frequently asked questions about Maynards Mini Gems

Q: Do Maynards Mini Gems contain gelatine?

A: Yes, Maynards Mini Gems contain gelatine, which means they are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The ingredients also list glucose syrup, starch, citric acid, flavourings, and carnauba wax as a glazing agent. They are confirmed dairy-free, and the allergen information notes they may contain wheat. Worth knowing before you share them around.

Q: What are Maynards Mini Gems and what do they taste like?

A: Maynards Mini Gems are small, colourful fruit flavour gums from the Maynards Bassetts range, made in the United Kingdom. They have a chewy texture and the kind of bright, fruity character you would expect from a classic British sweet-shop gum. The sort of bag people recognise by name without needing much persuading, which is either a sign of good branding or a very reliable childhood memory.

Q: Is this the UK version of Maynards Mini Gems?

A: Yes, these are imported directly from the United Kingdom and are the proper British version of Maynards Mini Gems. For customers in Canada who grew up with the Maynards Bassetts range, that matters more than it might sound. The 130g pouch format is the familiar British bag, and it is the sort of thing people add to a British sweets order specifically because a loose substitute would not quite be the same.

More about Maynards Mini Gems

Maynards Mini Gems sit firmly in the British fruit gum tradition: small, glossy, chewy pieces in a range of fruit flavours, made to be eaten by the handful rather than rationed carefully. They belong to the broader Maynards range, which has been a fixture of British confectionery for generations, and they share shelf space in the UK with other Maynards Bassetts classics like Wine Gums and Jelly Babies.

For British expats across Canada, fruit gums are one of those specific sweet categories that simply do not have a direct emotional substitute. The texture, the size, the particular chew of a Mini Gem is tied to British memory in a way that makes finding them here genuinely useful rather than merely nostalgic.

The 130g bag is a sensible, cupboard-friendly size: easy to store, no refrigeration needed, and the kind of thing that keeps perfectly well in a cool dry place until you need it, or until someone finds it. Confirmed dairy-free, which makes them straightforward to share in most groups.

If Mini Gems are your starting point, the wider range of British sweets available here covers a good deal of ground, from boiled sweets to chocolate bars, for anyone rebuilding a proper British sweet selection in Canada.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Halifax or Brampton, there is no waiting on an overseas parcel or paying international postage rates for a bag of sweets.
