About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Heinz Mushroom Soup 400g

About Heinz Mushroom Soup 400g

Some days call for a proper meal. Other days call for a tin, a pan and a slice of buttered toast. Heinz Mushroom Soup is for the second kind.

This is the one from the cupboard at home. It is the soup someone heated up when you were off school, eaten on a tray in front of the telly while pretending to be more poorly than you were.

You get four tins, so nobody has to ration it. Pour, heat, stir, and do not wander off, because it will catch on the bottom of the pan the second you check your phone. Ask anyone.

Frequently asked questions about Heinz Mushroom Soup 400g

Q: Is this the UK version of Heinz Mushroom Soup?

A: It is, made in the UK and the one you remember from home. We bring it over to our shop in Halifax, so it ships from within Canada.

Q: How much soup is in the pack?

A: Four tins, each 400g. That is four lunches, or two very good ones if you are sharing badly.

Q: Can I cook with it as well as eat it as soup?

A: Plenty of people do. It makes a handy quick sauce poured over chicken, pasta or a baked potato when you cannot face making one from scratch.

Q: What goes well with it?

A: Buttered toast or crusty bread for dunking is the classic. Most people put a tin of Heinz beans in the basket while they are at it.

More about Heinz Mushroom Soup 400g

In Britain, a Heinz soup is less a product and more a fixture of the kitchen cupboard. Tomato gets the fame, but mushroom has its own loyal crowd, the people who reach past the red label every single time and will tell you why without being asked.

If you grew up on it, you know exactly how it should taste, and you can tell in one spoonful whether it is the right one. That is usually why people go looking for it in Canada: not for any mushroom soup, but for this mushroom soup, the one with the familiar label and the familiar taste.

The pack is four 400g tins, which keep happily in the cupboard until a grey day demands one. Heat it in a pan on the hob, or tip it into a bowl for the microwave. One tin makes a decent lunch for one, and plenty of people pour it over chicken or pasta as a quick sauce when the fridge is looking thin.

It sits nicely next to the rest of the Heinz habit: a tin of baked beans for the weekend, a bottle of salad cream, and a loaf of something crusty for dunking. Soup without bread is just a hot drink.
