About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Galaxy Caramel

About Galaxy Caramel

The caramel is in no hurry, and neither should you be. Galaxy Caramel is the smooth one: soft milk chocolate squares with caramel that takes its time letting go.

It is the bar from the newsagent on the way home, eaten on the bus with a careful bite so the caramel would not land on your coat. It landed anyway. Every time.

It is the UK bar, the Galaxy you grew up with, and The Great British Shop sends it out from Halifax to anywhere in Canada.

Break off one square. See how long that lasts.

Frequently asked questions about Galaxy Caramel

Q: How big is the bar?

A: It is a 48g single bar, the size you would grab at the till. Enough for you, or for sharing if you are a better person than most of us.

Q: Is Galaxy the same as Dove?

A: Same family: Mars sells its smooth chocolate as Dove in a lot of the world. This is the Galaxy Caramel bar with the Galaxy name on it, the one you would have picked up back home.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: It is small, it travels well if it is kept cool, and it makes anyone who grew up with it go quiet for a minute. Tuck one into a parcel and see how fast the thank-you message arrives.

Q: What else does Galaxy make?

A: The plain smooth milk bar, Ripple, Minstrels and Counters are the big names. Ask us what is on the shelf and we will point you at the rest of the family.

More about Galaxy Caramel

Galaxy sits at the smooth end of the British chocolate shelf. It is the bar people name when they mean silky rather than snappy, and the caramel version has been a corner shop regular for years: by the till, at the petrol station, slipped into a lunchbox.

People search for it by name because the taste is specific. You remember the Galaxy name on the wrapper and the way the caramel stretched, and close enough never quite scratches the itch.

It is a single bar, one person's worth, or two people's if somebody is feeling generous. Keep it somewhere cool and out of the sun and the caramel stays where it belongs. It fits in a coat pocket, a desk drawer or a parcel for someone who has been away from Britain too long.

Galaxy makes more than the caramel bar: there is the plain smooth milk bar, Ripple, Minstrels and Counters, all from the same family. Most people who come in for one Galaxy leave with a few British favourites alongside it, usually a box of tea to go with the chocolate.
