About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Milk Chocolate Spread

About Cadbury Milk Chocolate Spread

The jar says spread. Half of it never meets the toast.

Cadbury Milk Chocolate Spread is the one you remember from the cupboard at home: that Cadbury milk chocolate taste, soft enough to go on with a knife and somehow gone by Thursday. Hot toast, a crumpet, a pancake on a lazy Saturday. Or a teaspoon, standing at the counter, when nobody is looking.

If you grew up with it, you know the routine. Lid off, knife in, lid on. Walk away. Come back. Knife in again.

A proper 400g jar, which sounds like plenty until somebody else in the house finds it.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Milk Chocolate Spread

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. This is the British jar from the United Kingdom, the one you remember, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 400g jar. That is a good few weeks of toast in theory, and rather less in practice.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: For someone who misses home, very much so. Pair it with a pack of crumpets and they will know exactly what you are getting at.

Q: What do people eat it with?

A: Hot buttered toast and crumpets come first, then pancakes and the odd sponge cake. A spoon also counts, quietly.

More about Cadbury Milk Chocolate Spread

In a British kitchen it lives on the breakfast shelf, between the jam, the marmalade and the peanut butter, and it gets reached for more often than any of them will admit. It is the Cadbury bar a lot of people grew up on, moved into a jar and handed a butter knife.

People in Canada search for it by name because the name is the whole point. They are not after any chocolate spread, they are after the Cadbury one, the taste that goes with school mornings, a toasted crumpet and the kitchen they grew up in.

It comes in a 400g jar that sits happily in the cupboard with the lid screwed on. It spreads straight from the jar onto warm toast, crumpets, pancakes or a plain sandwich for the lunchbox. It also turns up between the layers of a sponge, or stirred into a bowl of porridge by people who refuse to apologise for it.

It rarely goes in the basket alone. Crumpets are the obvious partner, and a bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk or a tin of Cadbury drinking chocolate tends to follow it out the door.
