About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Creme Egg

About Cadbury Creme Egg

Everybody has a method. Bite the top off, lick out the middle, then quietly judge anyone who just eats it like a normal person. The Cadbury Creme Egg has been starting that argument in British kitchens for as long as most of us can remember.

A thick chocolate shell, a gooey white and yellow centre doing its best impression of a yolk, and a foil wrapper that crinkles loudly enough to give you away. Spring has properly arrived when the first one turns up at the corner shop.

This is the UK egg, the one you remember, and we send it out from Halifax to anywhere in Canada.

So go on. How do you eat yours?

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Creme Egg

Q: How big is a Creme Egg?

A: It is a single 40g egg in its own foil wrapper. Big enough to make a mess, small enough that one never quite feels like enough.

Q: Is it a good thing to send as a gift?

A: Very. Tuck a few into an Easter parcel for someone who misses home and you have posted a whole childhood in foil.

Q: How should I store them?

A: Somewhere cool and dry, out of the sun. A warm Creme Egg is still perfectly edible, just considerably messier.

Q: What is the correct way to eat one?

A: Top off, middle out, shell last is the traditional method. In one go is also accepted, though it does raise eyebrows.

More about Cadbury Creme Egg

In Britain, the Creme Egg is the unofficial start of Easter. It shows up long before anyone has thought about hot cross buns, and it vanishes again before you have quite had your fill. That short season is half the appeal.

If you grew up with it, the Creme Egg is tied up with Easter Sundays, egg hunts round the back garden and a grandparent slipping you one when your mum was not looking. Finding the British one over here is a small, very specific kind of homecoming.

Each one is a single egg in its own foil, which makes it pocket-sized, lunchbox-sized and easy to hide from everyone else in the house. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, well away from a sunny windowsill, and the shell stays snappy while the middle stays wonderfully messy.

Creme Eggs rarely travel alone. They tend to end up in the same basket as a bar of Dairy Milk or two, tucked into an Easter card parcel, or lined up on the kitchen table for an indoor egg hunt when the weather has other ideas.
