About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Bonds Strawberry Bon Bons

About Bonds Strawberry Bon Bons

Nobody has ever eaten one bon bon. The bag opens, the pink dust gets everywhere, and that is your afternoon sorted.

These are Bonds Strawberry Bon Bons, the chewy pink sweets that used to live in a big glass jar on the top shelf, weighed out by the quarter while you hovered at the counter with your pocket money.

Chewy in the middle, powdery on the outside, and gone faster than you planned. Your fingers will be pink. Your jumper might be too.

This is the UK bag, shipped from within Canada, so the sweet shop comes to you for once.

Frequently asked questions about Bonds Strawberry Bon Bons

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 150g bag. Enough for a proper share, or a slightly less proper evening on your own.

Q: Do they stick together?

A: Only if you let them. Keep the bag sealed and somewhere cool and dry and they stay as separate, dusty little pink bon bons.

Q: Are they good to send as a gift?

A: Very. A bag of strawberry bon bons in the post to someone who grew up in Britain gets a better reaction than most things twice the size.

More about Bonds Strawberry Bon Bons

Bon bons are one of the old sweet shop jar classics in Britain, the kind of thing every corner shop kept on the shelf behind the till. Strawberry is the pink one, and for plenty of people it is the only one that counts.

People in Canada go looking for them because a smell or a colour sets something off. Someone mentions bon bons and suddenly you are eight, outside the newsagent, arguing about whose turn it was to hold the bag.

They come in a 150g bag, which is enough to share if you are feeling generous and enough not to if you are not. Keep the bag folded shut in a cool, dry cupboard, because bon bons left to the air have a habit of becoming one large bon bon. Tip them into a bowl for a film night and watch the bowl empty.

Bonds is a name built on traditional sweet shop sweets, and bon bons sit happily next to the rest of the British sweets on our shelves. Most people who buy a bag of these end up adding a second jar classic to the basket, purely for comparison.
