About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Bonds of London Butter Mintoes

About Bonds of London Butter Mintoes

Butter Mintoes are the kind of British sweet that does not need to explain itself. The wrapper is familiar, the flavour is familiar, and if you grew up in the UK, there is a reasonable chance you have spent time with one of these slowly dissolving against your back teeth without giving it much thought. That is not a criticism. That is the point.

Bonds of London Butter Mintoes are classic hard-boiled sweets with a butter and mint flavour, imported from the UK and available here in a 120g bag. The combination sounds like it should not work as well as it does, but British confectionery has been doing this particular thing for a very long time and nobody has seen fit to stop it.

For anyone looking for traditional British sweets in Canada without waiting on a parcel from the UK or hoping a visiting relative remembers to pack them, The Great British Shop stocks these as part of a proper range of UK confectionery shipped from within Canada. Bonds of London has been making sweetshop staples for generations, and Butter Mintoes sit squarely in that lineage.

These are straightforward boiled sweets with no fizz, no sour coating and no particular ambition beyond tasting exactly as they always have. Sometimes that is precisely what is needed.

Frequently asked questions about Bonds of London Butter Mintoes

Q: What do Bonds of London Butter Mintoes taste like?

A: Butter Mintoes are smooth, hard boiled sweets with a buttery flavour and a gentle mint note running through them. It is a combination that sounds a little odd until you have one, at which point it makes complete sense. They are not sharp or intensely minty in the way some sweets are, but quietly familiar, the sort of thing that has been sitting in a sweetshop jar for generations for good reason.

Q: Are Bonds of London Butter Mintoes suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Bonds of London Butter Mintoes are suitable for vegetarians. They do contain milk and soya, so they are not suitable for vegans, but there is no gelatine in the ingredients. The 120g bag is a straightforward classic British boiled sweet for anyone who wants something traditional without having to read too carefully.

Q: Are Bonds of London Butter Mintoes the UK version, and are they available in Canada?

A: Yes, these are imported directly from the United Kingdom, so it is the proper Bonds of London bag rather than a substitute. Butter mints are one of those classic British sweetshop sweets that do not have a straightforward Canadian equivalent, which is why people who grew up with them tend to look for the specific thing. It is the sort of item that ends up in a British shop order because nothing else is quite the same.

More about Bonds of London Butter Mintoes

Butter Mintoes sit within a category of British confectionery that rarely gets reinvented because it rarely needs to be: the classic hard-boiled sweet. This particular style, smooth, slow-dissolving, and built around a butter-and-mint combination, has been a fixture of British sweetshops for generations. Bonds of London is one of the names most associated with keeping that tradition going, producing the kind of sweets that end up in glass jars on counters and paper bags at market stalls across the UK.

For British expats and Canadians with a connection to the UK, finding this sort of sweet outside Britain usually means relying on a care package or a well-organised relative. That is why searches for traditional British sweets in Canada, and Bonds sweets in Canada specifically, tend to land on shops like this one rather than a local supermarket aisle.

The 120g bag is a sensible size: enough to last, small enough to tuck into a gift box or a desk drawer. These keep well at room temperature, which makes them a reliable cupboard sweet rather than something that needs careful handling.

Bonds of London produces a broader range of traditional British sweets beyond Butter Mintoes. You can browse the full Bonds in Canada range here, or explore the wider British sweets collection if you are restocking more than one variety.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Toronto or Kitchener-Waterloo, there is no waiting on an overseas parcel to arrive in questionable condition three weeks later.
