About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Fox's Glacier Mints

About Fox's Glacier Mints

Every glovebox in Britain has a half-finished bag of these, slightly stuck together and older than the car. Fox's Glacier Mints, the clear ones, the cold ones, the ones you remember.

A Glacier Mint is the sweet you were handed in the back seat, in a long queue or at your nan's. You do not crunch it. You are not allowed to crunch it. One mint, made to last a whole sermon.

They are the mint you forgot you missed until you saw the bag. Well, now you have seen the bag.

Frequently asked questions about Fox's Glacier Mints

Q: Are these the UK Fox's Glacier Mints?

A: Yes, the British ones, the same clear mints you remember. We send them out from within Canada, so they do not have to cross an ocean to reach you.

Q: How many mints are in the bag?

A: It is a 200g bag of individually wrapped mints. Enough to fill a pocket, a glovebox and the jar on the desk, if you can bear to share.

Q: Are they good to send to someone who misses Britain?

A: Very. Hand a homesick Brit a bag of Glacier Mints and watch them go quiet for a second. It is a small thing that says you were paying attention.

Q: Can you crunch them?

A: Technically, yes. Anyone who grew up with them will tell you that is not the point, and they will be watching.

More about Fox's Glacier Mints

Glacier Mints belong to that very British family of sweets that live in coat pockets, handbags and the little bowl by the till. Not a novelty, not a trend. Just a clear, cool, well-behaved mint that has been doing the same quiet job for as long as most people can remember.

Search for them from Canada and you are after one thing: the exact one. The look of it, like a little chip of ice. The slow cool that goes on for ages. The twist of wrapper you fiddle with while someone tells a story you have heard before.

The 200g bag is a good long run of mints. Each one is individually wrapped, so the bag sits happily in a cupboard, a desk drawer or the car door, and you can hand them round without anyone's fingers going where they should not. Keep them somewhere cool and dry and they will wait for you.

They tend to go in the basket with the other bits people miss from home: a box of proper tea, a packet of biscuits for dunking, and something for whoever sent you the list in the first place.
