About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar

About Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar

Salt and vinegar crisps are one of those things where the British version and the Canadian version are simply doing different things, and Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar is doing something different again. This is a 40g bag of British crisps made with Kalahari Desert salt and a proper vinegar tang, imported from the United Kingdom and available here without waiting for a care package.

The flavour follows the classic salt and vinegar logic you already know, but the Kalahari Desert salt brings a cleaner, more mineral quality to the seasoning. The result is sharp where it should be sharp, and settled where lesser versions just keep shouting. It is a 40g bag, which is the right size for eating without negotiating with anyone about it.

Savoursmiths sits in an interesting spot in the British crisp world: not a newsagent staple, but the kind of thing that turns up at a good deli or gets brought home from a food hall and then quietly purchased again. The Great British Shop carries the range for anyone in Canada who wants the UK version without the legwork.

These crisps are gluten-free, suitable for vegans and suitable for vegetarians, which is confirmed rather than assumed. The origin is the United Kingdom, the format is a single 40g bag, and the flavour is Desert Salt & Vinegar. No mysteries.

Frequently asked questions about Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar

Q: What does Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar taste like?

A: The flavour is the classic salt and vinegar combination, but built around Oryx Kalahari Desert salt rather than standard table salt, balanced with spirit vinegar powder and citric acid for a tangy, sharp finish. The current description calls it the classic hit of salt and vinegar, refined, which is a fair summary. It is familiar enough to satisfy a craving and distinct enough to make you read the bag.

Q: Are Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar crisps vegan and gluten-free?

A: Yes to both. Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar are confirmed suitable for vegans and are gluten-free, which is worth noting given that many crisps use wheat-based ingredients or flavourings. The base uses potato and rice flour rather than wheat, so they work for people avoiding gluten as well as those on a plant-based diet.

Q: What makes Savoursmiths crisps different from standard British salt and vinegar crisps?

A: The main distinction is the salt itself. Savoursmiths use Oryx Desert Salt, harvested from the Kalahari, rather than the standard refined salt found in most crisps. The recipe also includes medium chain triglycerides and rice flour, which affect texture and finish. It is still a salt and vinegar crisp in the way you would recognise, but the sourcing is more considered than the average bag from a petrol station shelf.

More about Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar

Savoursmiths Desert Salt & Vinegar sits within a small but serious corner of the British crisp market: snacks that take the familiar flavour territory of a classic and rebuild it with more considered ingredients. The brand uses Oryx Kalahari Desert salt rather than standard table salt, which shifts the seasoning in a direction that is harder to pin down but noticeably cleaner. For anyone who follows British food closely, it represents a category of UK snack that has grown steadily alongside the broader craft food movement without losing its snackability.

For Canadians looking to buy British crisps online, salt and vinegar is usually the flavour that starts the search. It is one of those deeply specific taste memories, and the British version is a different emotional object from its North American counterpart, which is why people go looking for it specifically rather than substituting something closer to hand.

The 40g bag is a single-serve format, which stores easily and travels well. It is gluten-free, suitable for vegans, and keeps happily in a cool cupboard until you need it. No refrigeration, no fuss.

Savoursmiths produces several flavours worth exploring if this one lands well. The full Savoursmiths range in Canada is stocked here, and sits alongside a broader selection of British crisps and snacks for anyone rebuilding a proper snack cupboard from scratch.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Ottawa or Calgary, there is no overseas parcel wait involved. It arrives as a bag of crisps should: intact, timely, and ready to open immediately.
