About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark

About Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark

If you grew up in the UK, the smell of a Terry's Chocolate Orange being cracked open is basically a Pavlovian Christmas response. The dark chocolate version has always been the one for people who find the original a bit too sweet, and it remains one of the more quietly satisfying things about the British festive season.

Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark is the same format as the classic: a moulded sphere of chocolate that separates into individual orange-shaped segments, each one carrying that distinctive combination of real cocoa depth and citrus oil. The dark variety has a noticeably more intense flavour than the milk version, which is either the point or the whole point, depending on who you ask. This is the 145g UK version.

The Great British Shop imports Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark from the United Kingdom, which means you are getting the product British expats in Canada actually recognise, not an approximation of it. No waiting on a parcel from home, no hoping a family member packs it in their luggage, and no explaining to someone at a checkout what you are looking for.

It turns up every year as part of the Christmas stock, and it tends to go quickly. If you are planning ahead for a hamper, a stocking, or simply your own cupboard, it is worth keeping an eye on availability when the seasonal range lands.

Frequently asked questions about Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark

Q: Does Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark contain milk?

A: Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark does not list milk as a confirmed ingredient, but it may contain milk traces. The allergens note states it may contain milk, along with nuts and wheat. The only confirmed allergen in the ingredients is soya, from the lecithins used as an emulsifier. If you have a serious milk allergy, that may-contain notice is worth taking seriously.

Q: Is Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark the same as the UK version?

A: Yes, this is the UK-manufactured version, imported from Great Britain. The ingredients list cocoa solids at a minimum of 43%, which is the dark chocolate formulation British shoppers know from the original. It is the same product that turns up in Christmas stockings and advent hampers across the UK, not a reformulated export version.

Q: Is Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark available year-round in Canada?

A: It tends to arrive as part of a seasonal Christmas import rather than a year-round stock line. The 145g dark version is a festive staple in the UK and is brought in as part of a limited Christmas range, so it sells out quickly. If you are hoping to get hold of one, signing up for a restock notification when it shows as unavailable is the most reliable approach.

More about Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark

Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark sits in a specific corner of the British confectionery world: a moulded chocolate sphere that breaks apart into individual segments, each shaped like a slice of orange and flavoured with citrus oil. It belongs to the same long-running Terry's range as the original milk version, but the dark variety has its own following among people who want the citrus character to land against something with genuine cocoa weight rather than sweetness.

For British expats in Canada, this is one of those products that is genuinely difficult to substitute. The format is distinctive, the flavour combination is specific, and the dark version in particular tends to be the one people remember most clearly from Christmas stockings or selection boxes.

The 145g ball stores well at room temperature in a cool, dry spot, which makes it practical to post or tuck away. It is not a product that needs refrigeration or special handling, so it travels sensibly across Canada without fuss.

Terry's Chocolate Orange Dark is part of a wider range worth exploring if you are rebuilding a British chocolate cupboard from scratch. The Terry's range in Canada includes the classic milk version alongside the dark, and the broader British chocolate selection covers much of what you might have grown up with.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Waterloo or Fredericton, there is no overseas parcel lottery involved. It arrives as it should: intact, unmelted, and ready to be cracked open properly.
