Frequently asked questions about Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard

Q: What do Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard sweets taste like?

A: They are boiled sweets with a sharp, fruity rhubarb edge balanced against a sweeter, creamy custard note, which is exactly the combination that has made rhubarb and custard one of the great British sweetshop pairings. The two flavours work together in the way they always have: the tartness hits first, the custard rounds it off, and the whole thing disappears faster than seems reasonable for a 130g bag.

Q: Are Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard sweets dairy free?

A: Yes, Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard sweets are dairy free. The ingredients are Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Citric Acid, Colours (Anthocyanin, Lutein) and Flavourings, with no milk or dairy components. The bag does carry a may-contain advisory for nuts and peanuts, so anyone with a nut allergy should take note of that.

Q: Is the Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard bag the proper UK version?

A: Yes, this is the UK-made Bonds of London bag, imported from Britain. Bonds of London has been part of the British sweetshop landscape for well over a century, and rhubarb and custard is one of their classic lines. For people in Canada who grew up picking these out of a paper bag at the newsagent, the appeal is usually the specific memory as much as the sweet itself, and a loose substitute simply does not cover it.

More about Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard

Rhubarb and custard is one of those British sweet shop combinations that has been around long enough to feel less like a product and more like a category in its own right. Bonds of London has been making boiled sweets for well over a century, and the Rhubarb & Custard sits comfortably within a range that covers the full sweep of traditional British confectionery, from pear drops to cola cubes to lemon sherbets.

For Canadians who grew up in the UK, rhubarb and custard sweets occupy a specific corner of memory that no local equivalent quite reaches. They are the sort of thing people search for by name, often after realising they cannot find them anywhere on a Canadian high street.

The 130g bag is a sensible size: enough to share, easy to store, and confirmed dairy-free, which makes it a straightforward choice for more people than the old-fashioned name might suggest. No refrigeration needed, and the bag keeps well in a cupboard or desk drawer.

Bonds of London produces a wide range of traditional British sweets, and the Rhubarb & Custard fits naturally alongside the rest of the Bonds in Canada range, as well as the broader selection of British sweets available here.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether someone in Toronto is restocking a familiar favourite or a parcel is heading to family in Winnipeg or Montreal, there is no waiting on an overseas delivery.

Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard

The story of Bonds of London Rhubarb & Custard

The jar on the top shelf

You know the one. Top shelf, behind the counter, and you had to ask for it by name. Rhubarb and custard was the sweet you pointed at when the pocket money stretched to a small paper bag and not a penny more. Bonds of London is exactly the sort of name that filled those shelves, and this is the bag that takes you straight back to standing on tiptoe, watching the scales and willing them to tip a bit further.

Old sweets, old firm

When Bonds of London changed hands in April 2016, the trade press described it as one of the UK's oldest sweet businesses. Not a bad line on the CV. The buyer was Innovative Bites, a US-foods wholesaler founded in 2008 by Vishal Madhu, and the deal ran to multiple millions of pounds. Madhu said Bonds had historically been known for traditional British sweets such as pick'n'mix jars and hanging bags. That is a very polite way of describing half the sweet shops of your childhood.

Same hands on the jars

Big deals have a habit of changing things nobody wanted changed. This one kept its managing director: Philip Courtenay-Luck stayed on with the business after the acquisition. The new owners clearly liked the sweet trade, because a year later Innovative Bites went on to buy pick'n'mix wholesaler Hancocks Cash & Carry in a deal worth about £100m. That is a lot of money riding on the British public still wanting a wine gum. Sensible bet, to be fair.

One for you, one for the jar

Put it next to the retro classics Bonds is best known for, the sherbet lemons and the wine gums, the sweets that live in a jar on the office desk or a bag in the car door. They get offered round once, out of manners. After that you start counting. And somebody always takes the last one, then swears blind there were two left when they looked.
