About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Mcvitie's Candy Floss Iced Gems

About Mcvitie's Candy Floss Iced Gems

Everybody eats the icing off first. The biscuit underneath is just the plate it came on.

McVitie's Candy Floss Iced Gems are the tiny round ones with the little swirled peak of icing on top, here in candy floss flavour, which is about as close as a biscuit gets to a day at the seaside.

Five packs, which sounds like plenty until the first one is open. They were in every party bag going, and a single handful puts you straight back at a birthday table with a paper plate and a balloon tied to your chair.

Frequently asked questions about Mcvitie's Candy Floss Iced Gems

Q: Is this the UK version of Iced Gems?

A: Yes, these are McVitie's Candy Floss Iced Gems made for the UK, and we ship them from within Canada. Same little peaks, same argument over who ate the icing.

Q: How many are in the pack?

A: It is a pack of five, which in most houses lasts about as long as it takes to find the scissors.

Q: Are they a good gift for someone who grew up in Britain?

A: Very much so. Hand a pack to anyone who had a party bag in the UK and watch them go quiet for a second.

Q: What do people do with them besides eat them straight from the bag?

A: They go into lunchboxes, party bowls and on top of homemade cupcakes. Straight from the bag is still the most popular option.

More about Mcvitie's Candy Floss Iced Gems

Iced Gems live at the small, cheerful end of British biscuits. Nobody serves them to the vicar. They turn up at children's parties and in lunchboxes, and grown adults claim they only bought them for the kids.

In Canada, people go looking for them because of a memory: a party bag, a school trip, a grandparent who always had some in the cupboard. Some want them for themselves. Plenty want their own children to learn the proper method, which is to nibble the top off and then deny it.

This is a pack of five, so one can go in a lunchbox while the others wait their turn. Keep them sealed in a cool, dry cupboard. They tip into a bowl for a party, scatter over cupcakes, and disappear from a coffee table faster than anyone admits.

McVitie's is the name behind half the British biscuit tin, from digestives and Hobnobs to Jaffa Cakes and Penguins. Iced Gems are the silly little cousin, and people tend to pick them up alongside a packet of something more sensible for the grown-ups.
